about

God first

God is #1 in my life. No question about it.

I attend Christian Familly Fellowship most sundays. I feel that they have the most heart and love for the accuracy of Gods Word anywhere in Ohio. I <3 cff.

I am spending this year of my life in the fellowlaborers "leadership training program". I am learning everything I can about how to study Gods word, run a bible fellowship, and generaly take care of people. It's been an amazing year so far.

The basics

I'm 21 years old. I'm a guy. I live in Ohio.

No, I don't live on a farm.

Work

I do mainly web development and tech support with a touch of sales here and there.

See my work section for details.

Play

I'm a complete internet junkie. I'm signed onto 11 screen names right now.

I used to be more of a gamer. I was prety good at Unreal Tournament 2004 for a while there, but now I hardly get a chance to play. Same story with Command and Conquer Generals.

I played paintball once, think I'll probably do that again sometime.

School

I finished my double major in Web Development and Computer Networking at Sinclair Community College majoring web development. I have two Associates of Applied Science degrees.

I studied Cisco networking for my last two years of highschool at CTC instead of attending regular high school. That was a great program - It got me 42 credit hours and a scholarship for sinclair.

For web design/development, I taught myself just about everything I know. I started learning html when I was 14. I wrote this site and plenty of others since then. I have worked a lot with php & MySQL for the past several years. I'v been working on Javascript / AJAX a lot also.

Things I like

netvibes.com is my homepage on all of my computers. It's about the best AJAX / RSS / Weather / Email (it has both of my gmail accounts on one page! gmail cant do that!) page out there.

meebo.com connects to every chat network around and runs in your browser. Optionaly saves all your logins and passwords and even chat logs! (I'd be in trouble without my chat logs.)

I LOVE Creative Commons! It just makes sharing easy. And remember, sharing is caring.

I regularly listen to This Week in Tech and occasionally some other podcasts ( Journey Inside My Mind, Death of the Cassette)

I like live music. I get most of my music fix by going to local concerts and shows and the majority of the CDs I've bought recently came from these events.

When I buy music online, it's usualy through Amie St. (Let me email you an invite though if you're going to sign up. then I get credit ;)

More me

I show up all over the place! Heres a few of the spots you can catch me on the net along with their avaliable widgets:

  • MySpace
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • last.fm
  • My photo album
<-- See the image block to the left.

work

I've been building websites for over 5 years. I've been getting paid to do it for over 3.

Current

I love my current day job! I work for a set of companies that all subsidiaries of D. Frankel & Associates Ltd. The companys include:

  • USA benefits Group
  • USABG Direct
  • iBoomerang
  • Internet Marketing Solutions

I am the lead developer for the iBoomerang BackOffice. A login is required however, and there is no demo account yet.

I also do web hosting and some freelance development on the side.

If you're a developer or a designer and looking for work, get in touch with me. I quite often get more requests than I can handle.

Past Projects

This is a collection of papers I've written and projects I've had a part in.

  • nFriedly.com - go to View > Page Source.
  • dev.nfriedly.com - where I'm tossing around ideas for the next revision of this site. Lots of AJAX.
  • Blue Letter Bible Search Plugin - a Firefox / IE search plugin I made and a nice looking install page to go with it.
  • Bubble Gum Blowers Group - A site I did for my CIS 131 class. I might touch it up a bit and give it away as a template.
  • I built the AJAX based chatbox on misticflame.com and did a lot of work on a previous theme.
  • iBoomerang BackOffice and Email Template Tool - By far the largest project I've done. I was the lead developer and Josh Hatfield helped me.
    • The BackOffice controlls access to all iBoomerang's tools. It's a php site with a simple plugin framework.
    • The Email Template Tool is an system for sending out professional looking emails in a one-on-one manner (not spam).
The system shows a live preview of the email, loading the template and all of your personal information on the fly. It allows you to fill in the recipients information plus specific one-time details such as an appointment time.
    • There are no public demo accounts, but you can attend one of our Training Sessions to get a live demonstration or call in at any time for a one-on-one demo.
  • SSL & TLS (.doc) A paper I wrote for my CIS 224 class that goes into the details of how SSL and TLS work.
  • I built the initial version of the product database used by Greenweavers Organics. (A site which I am proudly hosting.)
  • Procrastination is evil. - A paper I wrote for my ENG 111 class. ( doc | html )
  • brickballs.net // v7 - I did a landing page for this site and I realy like how it turned out.

Procrastination is Evil

Nathan Friedly

It was nearly 4 am when I finally finished the project. I guess that’s what I get for putting it off till the very last night before it was due to even start. Procrastination is downright bad. I emailed the work to my teacher and fell asleep before I hit the bed.

The next morning I woke up, sort of, and managed to get myself into class. The project was due in my English class at 8 am. Fortunately I had already turned it in several hours earlier.

It was winter and I came in wearing a heavy coat. I sat down and fell asleep. Roughly half an hour into class Mrs. Werbrich walked over, woke me up, and requested that I take off my hat. She asked if I was feeling alright.

“No.”

“I saw the time on that email you sent.”

“Yea…”

She turned, and I assume she walked away, though I was asleep too quickly to notice. My friends woke me up at the end of class. The rest of the day went similar to this, except other teachers weren’t nearly so tolerant of my snoozing during their lectures.

All that trouble because I simply didn’t get around to doing my month long project until the night before it was due.

I did get an A on the assignment though. The assignment had been to come up with a new product and a company to make it. I had to write on how the product would be used and why it would be so incredible. In my crazed frenzy to finish the project at 3am, the blood started flowing to my brain and I came up with a pretty good idea that had eluded me for the past month: a cell phone that can give you a shave – while you’re talking on it! It was perfect for the always-in-a-hurry traveling businessman!

Speaking of always-in-a-hurry, I had another situation just recently where procrastination caused a bit of a rush. I was at my church for a “Young Adult Advance” where a bunch of kids, college age through 30, spend a few days hanging out and studying the bible together. We stayed at the church for the weekend, which isn’t necessarily bad, unless all thirty-some of us are trying to take showers around the same time. The gentlemen slept upstairs and the ladies were downstairs. Showers were all downstairs, and we had to stay out of the each other’s respective areas between midnight and 7 am.

The ladies all got up before 7 am and most of them got their showers then; at least enough of them to use up all the hot water. So I got down there at about 7:15 to take my shower. There was a bit of a line but I got one by 7:30. And it was cold, not “aah, refreshing” cold, but Niagara Falls in January cold. That’s what happened on the first day when I did everything pretty much as soon as it was available.

The next day I was a bit disillusioned with doing everything right away. So I again woke shortly after 7 am, and then went right back to sleep. I got up around 8:30 and realized that I had put off getting up as long as I could. I was in a bit of a hurry because I had to get a shower, eat breakfast before 8:45 and be there for a teaching by 9. Needless to say, my shower was on the short side, but the water was scalding hot. I had to turn it to about half hot and half cold before it was comfortable. I couldn’t believe it: got an hour more of sleep and a hot shower when I put off getting up.

Still even if a procrastination situation ends up alright, procrastination itself is not good. It puts people under terrible stress. It forces us to rack our brains for anything of an idea, because all that time we could have spent working on a good idea we wasted on something else. Something like fiddling with a piece of metal.

Did you know that the guy who invented the paperclip invented it because of procrastination? He owed some money and had put off doing any real work, instead planning to eventually come up with some bright idea instead. And that’s pretty much exactly what happened. He was fidgeting with a piece of metal wire, further putting off getting a job, and out of the blue the paperclip idea struck him. The result of procrastination for him was that he didn’t have to do any real work and I have an easy, reusable way too hold my homework together without poking holes in it.

Perhaps procrastination isn’t the root of all evil after all. Perhaps it merely allows more time for what you enjoy while still getting the important things done eventually. It seems to have earned me an A, more sleep, a hot shower, and a handy tool to hold papers together. Wow, I had some other work to do this evening, but this piece of wire’s actually sort of interesting…
